At random: NAUTILUS has long been touted as the first Nuclear powered submarine. In fact, she was the first nuclear powered "anything". Nothing that moves was ever propelled by nuclear power before NAUTILUS.

Stephen R. Gedeon, 55, formerly of Crow, died peacefully on July 7, 2009 at Kadlec Medical Center, Richland, WA of complications from Multiple Myeloma. Stephen was born on August 8, 1953 in Hawthorne, CA, to Robert and Aldine (Quail) Gedeon. He graduated from Crow High School in 1971. During high school he was a member of Boy Scouts of America and was proud to achieve Eagle rank. He continued to participate in the organization throughout his life. He spent 9 years in the US Navy and another 20 years in the Oregon Army National Guard. During his time in the Navy, Stephen traveled the world while serving aboard a nuclear submarine. In 1976 Stephen received his BS in Nuclear Engineering at Oregon State University and he received his Masters in 1994. During his time as a student, he met Nancy Branham and they were married in 1976. He was a resident of the Tri-Cities, WA area for 20 years. He worked for various contractors associated with the Hanford area. In 2003 Stephen spent a year in Iraq as a civilian contractor. Stephen's passions were for history and the outdoors. He was especially interested in the Civil War and attended several reenactments and visited a large number of old military forts and other landmarks across the country. He loved to camp and hiked some of the most beautiful trails the Pacific Northwest has to offer. With a true zest for life, Stephen was always seeking new experiences and going places he'd never seen before. He always approached a challenge head-on and never encountered circumstances so dire that he couldn't find something to joke about. He strongly believed in helping people for no reason other than it was the right thing to do. Besides his wife Nancy, Stephen is survived by his son Andrew of Richland, his mother Aldine of Crow, his brothers Rick of Crow, Jim (Shelli) of Eugene, Paul Ward of Walnut Creek, CA, and nephews Jim of Junction City, Ryan of Eugene and niece Jenny of Eugene. An informal gathering was held at Leslie Groves Park in Richland, WA on Saturday July 11. Remembrances to the Boy Scouts of America. Please sign the guest book at www.registerguard.com/legacy

Carsie Mundy served aboard the USS>Sennet SS-408 as an ETR3(SS) during the years '62-'63.

I have one consolation that lives with me today.
That God is near to them, in his own special way.
So God in all Your mercy, keep near Thyself the soul,
Of every Submariner, still on his final patrol.

Lord, this departed shipmate with Dolphins on his chest
is part of an outfit known as the best.
Make him welcome and take him by the hand.
You'll find without a doubt he was the best in all the land.

So, heavenly Father add his name to the roll
of our departed shipmates still on patrol.
Let them know that we who survive
will always keep their memories alive.
Copied from USSVI Eternal Patrol

There is a port of no return where ships may ride at anchor for a little space. And then some starless night the cable slips leaving only an eddy at the mooring place. Gulls veer no longer, Sailor rest your oar. No tangled Wreckage will be washed ashore.
