I have the picture of the Sterlet that you posted. It was taken, I believe, after WWII, but before major 'refit' was done, which included the enclosure of the sail (?), and the addition of the bulbous sonar nose.

Did you find the picture of the Sterlet in the book 'Squadron Signal Gato-Class Submarines in Action, No. 28?' The reason I ask is that the Sterlet was a Balao-Class Submarine.

Are there lots of pictures in this book?

Oh, and is the 40 mm on the cigarette deck?

Thanks much...

Cora

sorry been on a different thought process with that book

no the picture was not from the book it was from http://www.navsource.org/archives/08/08392.htm and this is the caption  Sterlet (SS-392), in the tropics, circa 1944-45.  Photo by Bob Fedor, courtesy of John Prylzba, MMC(SS)(Ret) / dbfer.com.

Yes there are a lot of pictures of Gato Balao and Tench class which all are undersame title They seem to consider all three class basically a Gato class Just as many people do not consider Tench a seperate class Or that do not think the Stretch hull 637s are different or that the 688 improved is the same as the 688 class

Yes the 40mm was on the cigarette deck the 5" on the after deck and about this time in her life (from what I can readthey had several 50 cals forward as well as the 30 cals on the railing.

John Prylzba, (Chainfall) is a shipmate of mine. I can put you in touch with him if you want and maybe he can provide a better copy of the photo.
