William Edward Waycasy, II, 89, Bill (also known as Pop or Gramps) left behind a full and wonderful life on Monday, July 13, 2009. Born August 27, 1919, and raised in Little Rock, Arkansas, Bill began working as a child at the very early age of six delivering ice on his bike to supplement the family finances following the untimely death of his father. After going all through school and graduating, he joined the U.S. Navy, where he traveled twice around the world while on the battleship U.S.S. Louisville. Once the war broke out, he transferred to submarine services as Chief Motor Machinist on the submarine USS Sunfish (SS-281). Throughout the years serving his country, Bill was a middleweight boxing champion of the Pacific Fleet. While on leave with fellow shipmate, Jack Loftis, he was introduced to his future bride, Jack's sister, Rita, who he married in 1942. The couple moved to Rita's hometown of Coalinga, where they had their four children. They subsequently moved to the Ojai Valley where they resided for the next 59 years. During those years, Bill was known for many achievements which include Little League coach, Lyon's Club member and Past President, Soule Park Golf Course Past President and Handy cap chairman. He spent several years at the golf course where he taught the game of golf to his children and grandchildren in addition to cultivating many long-term friendships. One of the greatest prides of his life was becoming one of four partners to own Soule Park Golf Course. Many years following its sale, Bill was later honored with a lifetime membership to the golf course. Bill worked in the oil fields for 15 years, and became a member of Operating Engineers Local Union #12, where he became an onshore/offshore crane operator. He is survived by his loving wife, Rita, of 67 years; brother, Milton; as well as four children, Gary, Cheryl (Frank), Casey (Gina), and Harry (Raylene). He leaves behind grandchildren, Darren and Harlan Waycasy, Rob and Troy (Leslie) Rutherford, Blair, Kara and Chase Waycasy, Crystal (Marlan) Clark and Darrell Waycasy; great-grandchildren, twins Willem and Beckham, Logan, Skylar, Darrien, Brittney, Jeramy, T.J. and Chase. Bill was a man that loved his family very much and he will be missed more than words can ever say. There truly will be an empty spot in all our hearts. We want to send a very special thank you to the nurses at the Ojai Valley Hospital for the wonderful loving care that they gave our Dad. You are all angles. Each one of you treated him with such kindness and dignity, like he was your own. A memorial service for Bill is scheduled at 10 a.m., Friday, July 24th at the Ted Mayr Funeral Home, 3150 Loma Vista Rd., Ventura. Interment will follow at Conejo Mountain Memorial Park, 2052 Howard Rd., Camarillo. Arrangements are under the direction of the Ted Mayr Funeral Home and Crematory, Ventura.
