Use of the Middle finger as an insult is attributed to the English... they started using it after the French gloated that once they conquered England they would cut the middle finger of every citizen off so they could not use the Longbow. The English then presented their middle fingers on the battlegrounds to the French as show of the France's inability to defeat the English.

Of course you knew that the English would launch (pluck) arrows from longbows made from the wood of yew trees. Those citizens who still had middle fingers would show then to the French with the remark that they could still "PLUCK YEW"!
