The USS Sea Robin Association mourns the loss of A WWII Shipmate.

Eugene Thomas O'Neil, 84, of McKeesport, PA died Thursday, April23, 2009. Born June 22, 1924 in McKeesport, PA, a son of the late Owen and Sarah Bitner O’Neil, and brother of the late Lois Briggs and the lateHugh O’Neil. A US Navy combat veteran of WWII and Korea with service in all combat areas, he received 12 Battle Stars plus a Bronze Star, Various Presidential and Naval Unit Citations, Submarine Combat Insignia plus other decorations [O-2, Sea Robin, Picuda, Sablefish]. He had served two enlistments in the C.C.C. in Carlsbad,NM. A retired scarfer from US Steel National Tube Works he was a member of St.Mark’s Parish in Liberty Boro; a member and Past Grand Knight of the McKeesport Council # 955 Knights of Columbus and the Stephen P. Barry Fourth Degree Assembly and was named Knight of the Year in 1992. He had served 12years as a Director on the McKeesport Area School Board including a term as president, and was a former Cub and Boy Scout Master and Merit Badge Counselor.Mr. O’Neil was also a member of the Submarine Veterans of WWII Three Rivers Chapter; Past and Vice President of the McKeesport Allied Veterans Association; Life Member and Past Commander of Corp. Carl A. Everett post # 514 Veterans of Foreign Wars; the Port Vue American Legion Post # 447; and was a volunteer tour guide for submarine tourists on the USS Requin at the Carnegie Science Center. Surviving are his wife, Mary Ann Hudak O’Neil; son,Stephen M. (Terrie) O’Neil of Port Vue; daughter, Renie (Bob) Nicora of McKeesport; grandson, Stephen M. O’Neil, Jr. of Port Vue; and brother,Thomas E. O’Neil of NY. Interment in St. Nicholas Cemetery, West Mifflin,PA.
