At random: In their history, submarines were called by many names such as 'eel boats', 'plunging boats', 'devil divers', and 'pig boats'. Technically, and by size, the submarine is a ship, but it has been called a boat since its earliest days, and the term is steeped in tradition. Submariners almost invariably call their ships 'boats".

Here's a cut from Jean Sheperd. I *really* liked the guy. I remember listening to him lat in the evening with the "transister radio" under my pillow (as did many of my contemporaries).

And how about those long trips from Norfolk to NYC or from the sub base to NYC. Helped the time pass.

Norfolk to NYC - Delaware Police all over RT 13 stopping service men left and right. Big fines to be paid on the spot.

Now the State of Delaware sends me vacation literature. I can hold a grudge for 40 years...yes I can.

I'll stick to the Jersery Shore or Cape Cod.

The only station I remember from the east coast was the one "Cousin Brucie" was on. I think it was WABC but it's been almost 50 years so I could be wrong.

That show was from the late 60'ss.  He was on W NNNNNNNNNNNNNNN B C & I used to travel for my job and I would tune him for the long drives.  Quite funny THEN...I find him boring now.  He did a routine once where he called the HERTZ car rental place in INDY, just before Memorial Day and wanted to rent a Mustang.  He only needed it for 500 miles and he wanted them to remove the hubcaps, seats and tape the headlights.

Imus took his act on the road and did a stand-up gig.  I saw him in Poughkeepsie once.  He was obviously drunk / high during his routine.

I was pretty much into country music back then and tuned in WBAP- Ft. Worth/Dallas and the Bill Mack Show, WCKY- Cincinnati one Ohio and the "Redtop Baby Chicks", WWL- New Orleans. Man, there were some great programs then. Some can still be heard on Sat Radio.

I was only stopped once on Rt13 in Delaware. I was issued a warning because the cop was impressed by my brand spanking new SS396 Chevelle. He told me he followed me for miles to see if I'd do something other than doing 10mph over the limit. By the way, I've been living in Delaware since 1974 and it isn't all that bad. Joe Roche moved here a few years ago and likes it. We are still sales tax free. On a side note, do you remember the 13 pines eatery at the Rt13/Rt40 split by the RR tracks? Great cheese steaks and ice cold white or chocolate milk. Great pit stop between VA and NYC. Most of the natives I know here don't remember that little place.

You can get Bill Mack live every day live on XM radio channel 10 (don't know what channel it is on Sirius-47 I think) "Willie's place". I think he is on from 11 AM to about 2 or 3 PM. He broadcasts from Fort Worth, TX. Plays all the "old" country music. Interviews the old CM celebrities from 70's etc.

Man, does this thread bring back memories of many, many hours on a bus. A servicemen's special that picked us up at D&S piers and pulled into Port Authority NYC. I only went by car once from Port Authority. I think we knocked off and hour of travel time, but the car was cramped as hell. Never did that again. The ride up the Delmarva Peninsular was a very long ride into the nothingness of Delmarva. You'd see signs for towns, but I never saw one.....eerie as hell to a city boy!

This was the first time I had heard the term "Submarine Race Watching"...Murray the K.

I, too, remember WOR radio very well.  My Dad used to listen to it all the time.  John Gambling
was his favorite.   We also like WNEW...they used to churn out the oldies.  Every once in a while
they had a "marathon" of sorts with one artist...like Sinatra or Ella or both of them, and then
the Dorsey's and of course, the GREAT Glen Miller Band.

Hey Joe, do you remember Glen Island...they are still JUMPING over there.  Have a lot of
Swing dancing, but they still get the greats.  Garry and I went with my Mom and Dad
a few years before he passed away to see the Glen Miller Band and it was great.

I just have to jump in on Glen Island. We went to a family wedding there last year and was it ever a good reception. Glen Island has a special place in my heart. Back when I was a competitive rower I rowed out of the New York AC right opposite Glen Island. That was 1961 -1963 just before I enlisted. The island was pretty much desolate and we had many an after race beer bust there with numerous female companions along with my varsity 8 crew. We were very competitive but not fanatical, hence the training breaks. When I went to the wedding just the sight and smell of the place made me feel 45 years younger as the good memories flooded my mind. Of course the area is more built up but within the comminuity there are still some of the original places along with that house on it's own little island next to Glen Island, formerly known as Glen Island Casino. That was around Glen Miller's time and after. Thanks for bringing it up in your post reply.

I certainly remember WOR, WCKY. WWVA and some others from the 50s. I also remember the 13 Pines from that same period. Did many all nighters on Rt. 13 to the Jersey turnpike then to Rt. 17 up through the mountains to good old home in the Catskills.
I also remember my folks going (frequently), when we lived in Bay Ridge Brooklyn in the late 30s to early 40s to Glen Isle Casino.
I am fortunate to have old family movies put on tape from the time I was about 3 years old until I got out of the Navy.

Ah, come on, Joe...how long did you live in Rockland Co.!!!  Glen Island is in New Rochelle...the southern most tip of the city on the Sound.  That place was always hoping, even when it wasn't hoping.  The beauty of the place...is that "outside organizations", the ordinary person and "stars" of all kinds
had a great place to get together and socialize.  I went to several police functions there, as my Dad was a cop in the Town of Greenburgh.  He was always being invited to one function or another...and I, along with my Mom, got to partake.  It was such a great place to have these functions.  You
would walk into that great hall...and literally "feel the music"...feel the people who had made that music...and the people who just came to hear it.
City Island was another great place...and still is...haven't been out there in years.  The one thing about that tip of New Rochelle, was all the great
beach and tennis clubs.  Even though they were all "members only", they had a sense of community, and opened their doors to MANY!

Sorry Patti, I just asked the 'Boss' and she said we never went to that place. We went to a place in Da Bronx, a 'talian' country club for a wedding. It was overlooking the bay...

"Cousin Brucie" -- Originally on WINS (before it went all news in 1965); later on WABC (as one of the "All Americans"); now on Sirius (channels 5 & 6). Remember Palisades Amusement Park? (You'll have fun, so come on over)

Murry the K -- Always on WINS.

Here's some other names you might remember:

Herb Oscar Anderson (the Morning Mayor), Charlie Greer, Scott Muni, Harry Harrison, Ron Lundy, Dan Ingram, Chuck Leonard. Also heard on WABC was sportscaster Howard Cosell.

WMCA: Joe O'Brien, Jack Spector, Dandy Dan Daniel, Gary Stevens, B. Mitchel Reed, Dean Anthony, Ed Baer.

WABC was a 50,000 watt "clear channel" station - it was the only station using that frequency (770 kHz). On a good night you could (and I did) hear it all the way down in Key West, FL.

IIRC, WLS in Chicago was also "clear channel." I don't remember their frequency, tho.

Do you remember "Chickenman?" (HE'S EVERYWHERE, HE'S EVERYWHERE!!!)

And , yes, my youth was mis-spent. :-)
