It will be interesting to see how the Obama regime responds to this. I'm betting he won't say anything about it.

Maybe they're trying to make it down to Venezuela and decided to try out our defenses by going down the east coast.

Naw, Ya'll got it all wrong, they are going to check out the Gitmo Hilton!
Serioiusly though, why all the fuss, it gives us a chance for some "life fire" drills close to home. ie. sneak outta Norfolk, bag him, and be home for supper!!

Should we all run and hide under our tables. John 396

If you hide under a table you will be accused of looking up skirts

We should not overlook the fact that we know where they are in the ocean.

A submarine is not very effective if it cannot hide.

If they had managed to sneak out, patrol up and down the Atlantic coast and sneak home without being spotted and managed to sneak back home again they wouldn't have accomplished anything.

But, if they popped up somewhere off Bermuda, called home loudly, waved to the USN that gathered around them and then snuck home without being spotted again or tracked, they would have accomplished a hell of a lot.

However, one would think either of the above scenarios is rather unlikely. Most likely they were picked up by a US SSN somewhere on the way out, then by SOSUS, if its still operational, and then tracked in the Atlantic by US surface, air and, dare I say, SSN assets. This would prove that Russia has at least two functional Akula 2's capable of fairly long patrols but really not that quiet, or, for that matter, dangerous.

The report of one Akula off of Georgia sounds like an attempt to monitor and trail any TRIDENT boomer departure from Kings Bay.  The Continental Shelf extends a long way seaward at that point, so it would make sense that the SSN was several hundred miles offshore.

" “Anytime the Russian Navy does something so out of the ordinary it is cause for worry,” said a senior Defense Department official who has been monitoring reports on the submarines’ activities.

The official said the Navy was able to track the submarines as they made their way through international waters off the American coastline. This can be done from aircraft, ships, underwater sensors or other submarines.

“We’ve known where they were, and we’re not concerned about our ability to track the subs,” the official added. “We’re concerned just because they are there.” "

This is the key issue for me. A change in behavior. The Bear is stirring.

What will they do next? Worth watching closely.

Putin's trying to make himself (Russia) relevant. That is why they had stated the Bear flights again. They want to be a player again.
