At random: The USS NAUTILUS SSN 571 steamed 60,000 miles on a lump of Uranium the size of a golf ball. A diesel powered submarine would have required 3,000,000 gallons or 300 railway tank cars of oil.

James William Wynen, 76, former Fairbanks resident died December 18, 2008, in Las Vegas, NV. Jim was born June 10, 1933, in Oshkosh, Wis., and grew up in the Lake Winnebago area of Wisconsin and worked for his father in the meat cutting business, eventually becoming a journeyman meat cutter. At an early age, he enlisted in the US Navy and served in the aboard the submarine USS Sea Cat (SS-399). He moved his family to Alaska 1970 and plied his trade as a butcher and was part owner in a game cutting business. Eventually, after a run at real estate he found his niche as an insurance agent with Allstate which he occupied until his retirement. Jim had lived in Fairbanks for 38 years. Jim loved fishing and hunting. He held memberships in the Fraternal Order of Moose in Fairbanks and the Fairbanks Elks Lodge. He loved going to Las Vegas to visit his family and moved there one year ago. Jim enjoyed life to the fullest; he was a kind, humorous man who could be generous to a fault. He always had a joke to tell, usually dirty and he either "didn't remember or didn't care" how many times he told it. He had a mischievous twinkle in his eyes which he kept until his passing. Jim was known to all as the "Buddha" and to some as "Mr. White Keys" when he would play the automatic piano on stage. He loved reggae music and would be the first to start a cha-cha line dance. He will always be remembered by his daughter, Andrea; son, Patrick; stepdaughter, Dora; and stepson, Juan; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and his sisters, Claudia, Pamela, Jacqueline and Joie. He had far too many friends to list. In remembrance of Jim, there will be a memorial service at 3 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 9, at Fairbanks Moose Lodge 1392, 98 10th Ave. Any contributions to the potluck that afternoon at the Moose Lodge would be greatly appreciated.
