Wonder if there is any way it could be copied then sold as a fund raiser? Reading your history page I remember serving with two brothers, one aboard the Balao (1962-63) and the other aboard the Tirante(1963-66). They both had been Stewards from the Phillipines then converted to the EM rating. Both were EM2(SS) and very good at their chosen ratings as they seemed to have to prove themwelves more than others. Their last name was Sirios. I enjoyed serving and working with both as they thought my last name fit more with their previous rating. They always seemed to be happy unless you called them a dergotary name then they would bristle. They did appreciate being in the US Navy and did send money home to help and invest for the future. Not sure where they ended up but I heard the oldest was living around Groton some where. T.Spoon, DBF

Most people do not know that the testing to become a member of the US Navy for a Filipino was very hard. Almost all were collage graduates. The navy tested about 50,000 each year, from all those only the top 1200 were selected each year. Very smart people. They can be your best friend or your worst nightmare depending on how you related to them. Wonderful folks.

Frank was a gold stripe 1st class complete with War Patrol Pin. I used to sit in the forward room with him while he was on watch and listed to the NTINs. Were they all true, maybe but entertaining none the less. He wasn't the most outgoing guy but we got along fine. It was one of my many exposures to the old DBF Navy.

Someone must have given them a stern order to square thier raghats, otherwise they would have been back of head and tilted to one side as was custom of the times. You can tell the war is over and more military do-duh is in place. Great shots, though.... musta been a squad-dog change of command. "Those were the days my friend" Steamboat sends

Senior Crew Posts: 214 Location: Ladson SC | Subject: RE: Repost of an old page I was intrigued by the number of chiefs on some of the boats. I think I counted 12 chiefs on one of the boats. Hogans alley must have been taken over by the chiefs that couldnt fit in the goat locker. Awful lot of chiefs for one boat. Cant remember ever seeing anywhere near that many chiefs on a diesel boat.

As this was 1949, wouldn't flat hats been more correct?

I was issued one at boot camp outfitting in San Diego (1950) but only wore it in the Puget Sound area. The photos are from San Diego ~
