William Palmer Murtha Sr., LCDR, USN (Ret.), 71, of 254 South Road, Groton, died at his residence on Monday, August 9, 2009. He was born October 22, 1932, in Waterford, the son of John E. and Ethel Laura (Palmer) Murtha. Mr. Murtha served in the US Navy from 1950 to 1974 and retired as lieutenant commander. He is a veteran of the Korean conflict and the Vietnam War. Following his retirement he worked for Rockwell International as a sonar analyst and for Integrated Systems as a senior tech specialist, and later at Electric Boat in Groton as an engineering specialist. He was a member of the Submarine Veterans and the Retired Officers Association. Survivors include his wife, Johanna (Frye) Murtha; a son, William P. Murtha Jr. of Suffolk, Va.; three daughters, Mary Ann Vitale of Pawcatuck, Doris Swan of Montville, and Patricia Vanwart of Ivoryton; a step-daughter, Sara Sherman of Ivoryton; two sisters, Doris Roma of Minot, N.D., and Elizabeth Fusco of Manchester; and eight grandchildren. The funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Friday at Shepherd of the Sea Chapel, Gungywamp Road, Groton. Burial with military honors rendered by the Antique Veterans will follow in Jordan Cemetery, Waterford. Calling hours will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St., Groton.
