Jack L. Gifford, 79, of East Durham, NY passed away suddenly at the Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson, N.Y. on August 11, 2009. He was born in Durham, N.Y. on July 26, 1930, son of the late Charles "Jack" and Anna (Weid-inger) Gifford. Jack was a career Navy man being discharged in 1968 as a chief petty officer. He served on many different ships including the USS Saratoga, the USS Oriskany, the submarine USS Quillback and his last ship, the USS Samuel Gompers. He had received the Good Conduct Medal (five), National Defense Service Medal (two), and Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (one). He was a member and past commander of the Durham Valley Post #1416 American Legion, a member and past commander of the Greene County American Legion, a member of the Fleet Reserve Assn. and a former member of the Oak Hill Durham Vol. Fire Co. Surviving is his wife, Florence (Vetter) Gifford; sons, Michael Gifford (Suzanne La Rosa), Patrick Gifford (Angelika); stepchildren, Michael Flannery (Sharon), Maureen Klimtzak (Michael), Lorraine Spinner (Thomas), Daniel Flannery (Suzanne) and Kathleen Cutright (Gary); also 14 grandchildren, five great- grandchildren; a brother, Richard Gifford and sister, Audrey Reffner. Funeral service will be 8 p.m. Thursday, August 13 at the Cunningham Funeral Home, Greenville, N.Y. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday, 4 to 8 p.m. prior to the service. The Oak Hill-Durham Vol. Fire Co. & the Durham Valley Post 1416 American Legion will conduct services at the funeral home prior to the funeral. Interment will be on Friday, August 14 at 9:30 a.m. in the Saratoga National Cemetery. Those who desire may donate in his memory to the town of Durham Ambulance Fund.

Billy Charles "Bill" Hankins passed away Thursday July 30, 2009 at Copper Ridge Care Center. Bill was born May 6, 1928, at the family home south of Lawton, Oklahoma to Alfred Paul Hankins and Meta Mae Green Hankins. He graduated from Lawton High School May 23, 1946. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy August 6, 1946 in Oklahoma City and attended boot camp and various service schools at San Diego. He also attended clerical school in Bainbridge, Maryland. He was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars and served on destroyers, had submarine duty in the South China seas. He served twenty years in the military and earned numerous medals. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in June 1967, was employed in Civil Service at the San Diego Naval Station Supply Depot for twenty years. He retired in 1986 and later moved to Redding to be near his sister. Survivors include two sisters: Dorris I, Costarella of Redding, and Evelyn H. Schneider of Lawton, Oklahoma, a brother Adelbert Wayne Hankins of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Alfred Paul Hankins Jr., and a sister, Betty Jo Baker. Private interment service will be at the Veteran's Cemetery, Igo, CA under the direction of Lawncrest Mortuary, Redding, Friday August 14, 2009. RICE, Robert "Bob", 78, of Largo, died August 10, 2009, at Largo Medical Center. He was born in Cleveland, OH, and relocated to Florida in 1974. After a career in the automobile industry, Bob joined Raymond James & Associates, retiring in 1996. Since his retirement Bob and wife Rosie have traveled to 49 countries. Mr. Rice was a Korean War veteran who served honorably in the US Navy submarine service. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Rosemary (Seidel) Rice, whom he married Aug. 24, 1957; children, Ruth, Rosie (Valerie), Raymond (Lisa), Ron (Vicky), and Roberta (Steve); 11 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren, with 2 more on the way; and a sister, Patricia Kolbe. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, Aug. 14th at 11 am at St. Patrick Catholic Church. Interment will take place at Bay Pines National Cemetery. Visitation hours are scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 13th from 7-9pm at Moss Feaster Funeral Home, Serenity Gardens Chapel in Largo, 562-2080. Please visit Mr. Rice's webpage at www.mem.com

Robert E. Wallace, 82, of Greenville, Ohio, passed away Monday, August 10, 2009, at Hospice of Dayton. Robert was born April 7, l927, in Dayton, Ohio. He was the son of the late Guy and Bertha (Buzzard) Wallace. Robert formerly worked as a sales representative for Wills Trucking Company of Cleveland, Ohio and later for the Goshen Indiana Trucking Company. He later retired from the Genoa Christian Church where he served as their Lay Minister for five years. He was a Veteran of World War II serving in the Submarine Service of the US Navy. A member of the First Presbyterian Church of Greenville, the Darke County Y.M.C.A., a volunteer with Hospice of Darke County and an active member of the McDonald's morning coffee gang. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters. Robert is survived by his wife, Mrs. Germaine (Bulcher) Wallace of Greenville. They were married December 6, l972. Also by his children, Jeff Wallace (Wilma) of Swanton, Mike Wallace (Cindi) of Toledo, Tom Wallace (Cindy) of Toledo, Sandy Morse of Toledo, Mary Ann Lorenzen (Rick) of Traverse City, Michigan and Kathy Palmer (Steve) of Adrian, Michigan. Also 23 grandchildren; 25 great- grandchildren; a sister, Nettie Mae Taylor of Miamisburg and numerous nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 21, 2009, in the First Presbyterian Church, 114 East Fourth St., Greenville, Ohio, with the Rev. Dr. John Person officiating.
