Robert C. "Bob" Asin, 93, died in mid-August 2009 Bob was born in Rosario, Argentina of Basque parents on June 7, 1916. The family came to the United States when he was five months old and settled in Hollister, Calif. He attended local schools and graduated from high school in 1935. Bob's strong work ethic came at an early age. He helped run the family's boarding house, he cut apricots in the summers and herded sheep in the winters, all to earn and save for school. Pursuing an early interest in electronics, Bob continued his education at Heald Engineering College in San Francisco, where he excelled and became an instructor. Upon completion, he returned to his hometown of Hollister to open his first radio repair shop. In 1940 Bob would marry the love of his life, Doris Gieg. At the start of WWII he enlisted in the Navy and because of his experience, he was sent to Texas A&M for an advanced electronics degree, finishing a three year curriculum in six months. He volunteered for submarine service and was assigned to the USS Skipjack. He was Chief Petty Officer in charge of the ship's radar systems. His time was spent in the Pacific where he was on numerous war patrols. He proudly served his country until his discharge in 1945. After the war, Bob and Doris settled in Pittsburg, California, where they raised their three children. Bob once again opened a radio repair shop, Bob's Radio & TV sales and service, until his retirement in 1980. Throughout life, Bob always enjoyed the outdoors whether it was camping with his family or hunting and fishing, even partnering on a commercial salmon fishing boat in Alaska for three years. Other interests along the way included being a Ham radio operator, being a private pilot and serving with the Boy Scouts of America as a scoutmaster. Following a short retirement he took a position with the Pittsburg Unified School District teaching automotive classes. After eight years, it was time to retire again, this time relocating to Boise to join his children and grandchildren. Bob and Doris traveled throughout the Northwest in their motorhome and also took numerous cruises. Bob was active in Boise for his last 26 years. He continued his love of the outdoors, hunting and fishing in various locations with his sons. He also liked participating in the Senior Olympic games, winning over a hundred gold medals in a 15 year span. Other hobbies included archery competitions, as well as archery hunting, walking with the Happy Hoofers, horseshoe competitions, playing tennis with friends and exercising at the YMCA and the Eagle Senior Center. Bob is survived by his wife of 69 years, Doris, three children and their spouses, Gary and Lori Asin of Boise, Larry and Cheryl Asin of Boise, and Sharon and Joe Mastroianni of Cape Cod, Mass. He leaves behind eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and one sister, Jenny Hill of Hollister, Calif. He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Claudia Kaye, his mother, Teresa Asin and a sister, Catherine King. At Bob's request there will be no formal services; the family has chosen to have a private celebration in memory of his life. Cremation is under the direction of Summers Funeral Homes. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Eagle Senior Center. He will be sadly missed by all.
