At random: The USS Blenny SS 324, on her last patrol of WW II sank 63 vessels. One by torpedo and 62 by deck gunfire, demolition charges set by boarding parties or by burning. On several occasions shotguns were fired through the boats bottoms. These were all vessels under the 500 ton JANAC limit for tonnage sunk and not counted in the "official" totals or ships sunk. This is also a record for the most vessels ever sunk by a submarine on one patrol.

William R. Gill, 87, of Charlotte passed away August 18, 2009 at his residence. He was born August 5, 1922, in Charlotte, North Carolina, the son of the late Nicholas and Hattie Gill. Mr. Gill served in the US Navy during WWII throughout the Pacific Theater in the Submarine Corp. He was employed and retired as Test Crew Manager with Duke Power after 45 years. His passion was family, he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He was a member of Quail Hollow Presbyterian Church. In his spare time he enjoyed woodworking and volunteered this labor of love for church functions. Surviving are his loving wife of 63 years, Kathryn Lomax Gill; daughter, Suzanne (Glen) Karasiewicz; son, Jeff (Miyako) Gill; grandchildren, Kathryn and Sandra Karasiewicz, Justin and Russell Gill, and Christopher and Michael Campbell; great grandchild, Aidan Campbell; and brothers, Joseph (Betty) Gill and Herbert (Sylvia) Gill. He is predeceased by a brother, Howard Gill; and sisters, June Glasgow and Natalie Snoots. A visitation will be held from 7:00 PM until 8:30 PM Friday, August 21, 2009 at McEwen Pineville Chapel. A funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, August 22, 2009, at Quail Hollow Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow in Sharon Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care, Charlotte Region, 1420 East 7th Street, Charlotte, NC 28204, and Quail Hollow Presbyterian Church, 8801 Park Road, Charlotte, NC 28210.

George Davis Mahaffey, 85, died on Saturday, August 1, 2009, at Renown Hospital after a short illness. George was born on May 4, 1924, in Braxton, MS. George attended Copiah-Lincoln Jr College in Wesson, MS and graduated from Mississippi College at Clinton, MS. His college career was interrupted for military service during the Second World War. He participated in numerous exercises in the South Pacific, including the invasion of both Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima. After the conclusion of World War II, he returned to Clinton to finish up his degree work. While still at the University, George married Edna Stoddie Stoddard, a former Navy Nurse whom he met while on active duty. After World War II, George Continued his Navel Service in the Navel Reserve. Then in the early 60's, he was recalled to active duty during the Korean War. He again served in the South Pacific, this time aboard a submarine. He retired as a Lt. Commander. After the war and graduation from college, he was associated with the sales department for the National Cash Register Company for 38 years. George was very active in Masonic and Shriner activities and was associated with these organizations throughout his life. He was preceded in death by his parents, Davis Buford Mahaffey and Nanabel Caraway Mahaffey, and his wife, Stoddie. He is survived by his son, George D. Mahaffey II; daughter-in-law, Bonnie; three granddaughters, Jessica, Jenna and Leah Simpson; one grandson, Joseph Wyatt Fronk. He is also survived by a sister, Jo Ann Stanley, and two brothers, Dennis Mahaffey and his wife, Betty, Edmond Dee Mahaffey and his wife, Carolyn, four nephews and two nieces. A Memorial Service will be held at the Shrine Temple, located at 4935 Energy Way in Reno, on Sunday August 23,2009 at 1 p.m. Arrangements are under the direction of the Fernley Masonic Lodge #34 F & AM. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to one of the Shriner's Crippled Children's hospitals.

Richard "Dick" F. Behrendsen, 79, of Tuscarawas Township, suddenly went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at Mercy Medical Center following a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born on July 24, 1930 in North Monroeville, Ohio the son of the late Carl Behrendsen and Cynthia Stark. Dick was a U.S. veteran of the Navy serving on the "USS Clamagore" submarine during World War II era. Dick worked for Ohio Edison for 43 years before retiring in 1991. He was an active member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church where he served on counsel, bible study and various committees. He was also involved in preparing taxes through the Senior Centers, volunteering at the Stark Co. Fair, gardening and the outdoors. Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Marilyn (Wurmser) Behrendsen in 2004, his step-parents, Victor Stark and Emma Behrendsen, and his sister-in-law, Betty Wurmser. He is survived by his children and their spouses David Behrendsen of Scottsdale, AZ, Ron (Helen) Behrendsen of Canal Fulton, Carol (Pat) Murphy of New Albany, IN, Diane (Tim) Knight of Canal Fulton; his grandchildren, David H. & Michael Behrendsen, Daniel & Joseph Murphy, Heather, Heidi, Holly, TJ & Hannah Knight; his sisters, Juanita (Roger) Hershiser of Castalia, OH, Kim Sutter and Jodi (Denny) Cummings both of Freemont, OH; his brothers, Victor "Herb" (Linda) Stark of Monroeville, OH and Larry (Barb) Behrendsen of Freemont, OH, and his brother-in-law Ralph Wurmser of Collins, OH. A Celebration of Richard's Life will be held on Saturday at 2:00 P.M. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. Pastor Chip Belanga, Jr. will be officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at the Paquelet Funeral Home on Friday from 5-8 PM and one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church: 4275 Lincoln Way West, Massillon, Ohio 44647.
