A friend of mine was recently reading the last couple of paragraphs that Elmer wrote and she found something that needs clarification. I looked back in my notes, hoping to find the missing word, but it was written the same way initially also.
Here's the paragraph:
"We thought we had hit pay dirt two days later when our sonar operator reported the sound of distant screws to the east of us. We were able to eventually see the tops of three large cruisers and six destroyers. They were estimated to be about 29,000 or a little over sixteen miles away. We were not in a good targeting position so we closed at high speed hoping for an advantage. We were never able to get closer than 8,000 yards or four and a half miles. Too far to get a shot. So we watched this great target opportunity go away."
Question: 29,000 what? Did he mean to say "29,000 yards?"

Usually targeting distances were given in yards. Now days so Europeans and the rest of the world can understand what we are saying the US military is using meters. Which is screwy sense since that systems ends up with the meters being longer than the yards but kilometers being less than miles. I blame the French. |

The Metric system is easy to use.
I too like it becasue I am getting back into lifting weights after tearing a tendon in my right shoulder July '08.
I am now Bench Pressing and Military Pressing 40 KG's......which is easier on my mind than saying I am pressing 88LB's...see how 'lighter' the weight is? lol
Next week I am adding 10 more KG'S. ( 50 KG = 110 LB's ) All of this doesn't do anything to my physique by the way, I still remain slim.

Oh yeah, who are you calling fat, Fatso???
I wouldn't say Ralph was fat, but there is another reason he drove semi trailers instead of cars.......so he could get somewhere!
I wouldn't say Ralph was fat, but he rode Aircraft Carriers not Submarines...
OK, I will leave it at that!
Lots of love and kisses
