At random: John Philip Holland built several submarines before the USS Holland, which became the first undersea craft commissioned by the U.S. Navy. The Holland was purchased on April 11, 1900 for a price of $150,000. It was commissioned into the US Navy on October 12, 1900.

Didn't even know this was going on until I read this post on another BBS.

Not a very favorable review.

Never been there myself, driven by many a time.

Many of my friends and acquaintances who have been say many of the same things.

Maybe that's why it loses money most years (like so many other parts of California's government).

Econ 101 - If you want to make money, give the customer something he wants, at a reasonable price.

A lesson long lost on most bureaucrats and California Legislators.

Who goes to the State Fair to eat health food? They heavily advertise all the deep fried junk they sell.

Today is dollar day for the kids on the rides. They also have a Seniors Day where you get in at a discount.

There are many exhibits in the buildings showing 4-H projects and animals, high school shop class projects, commercial vendors and their junk, and the animal barns where you can watch baby animals being born, all for FREE.

Granted the parking is the biggest rip off going and it is for every event they have there during the year. But parking is also a rip off at ARCO Arena.

If this guy had such a bad time how did he spend $300?

Tims right. The fair can be a great time. Not only junk food but BBQ chicken and ribs, roast beef sands. and etc. Went for years 2 or3 times. Looked at all the animals then headed for the race track, then when I was broke I went home.

Our (Alaska's) state fair is going on now.  If it stops raining we're going.

We took my niece and nephew, now 9 and 6, last year and the year before.  Took them to the petting zoo and they had a great time with the juvenile pigs, sheep, ducks, chickens, goats, etc.  For a quarter you could buy food pellets and feed the critters.  It took all our efforts to drag them away.

My niece rode the Tilt-a-Whirl and pissed her pants it was such a good time.

The fairs are for kids and worth every penny.
