Leland Lawrence Flinn, 98, passed away August 23, 2009 in Houston. He was born June 19, 1911 in Long Beach, California. He was a World War II submarine Veteran [Steelhead, Silversides, CSD 242], a founding member of St. Ambrose Parish and a C.D.C. teacher. He participated in Meals on Wheels for numerous years. Leland is preceded in death by his first wife, Lucille Flinn; second wife, Ann Finger Flinn; son, James L. Flinn, and brother, Lyle Flinn. He is survived by his daughter, Theresa L. Galloway; sons, Michael L. Flinn of Galveston, TX, Barry L. Flinn, and Christopher L. Flinn; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A vigil service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, August 31, 2009 in the Chapel of Pat H. Foley & Co. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, 4213 Mangum Rd., Houston, TX, 77092 on Tuesday, September 1, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. A Rite of Committal will follow at Woodlawn Garden of Memories. Friends may visit at 11 a.m. until 8 p.m., Monday, August 31, 2009 at Pat H. Foley & Co.

John Searles Norton, 87, of Vadnais Heights, died at home August 19, 2009 Preceded in death by parents, Cyrus & Bessie. Survived by wife, Dorothy; daughters, Marilyn, and Barbara Hanawalt Mark); son, Gregory; grandchildren, Melanie Boughman (Robb), Michael Hanawalt (Justine), Matthew, David and Daniel Hanawalt; great-grandchildren, Max and Madeline Boughman. John was born in Fort Dodge, IA, graduated from high school in Manson, IA, was awarded a BSEE degree from the University of Iowa and married Dorothy Howard on Dec. 23, 1943. He served in WWII as a First Lieutenant on the submarine USS Sea Fox (SS-402). He started his career at Westinghouse, followed by Honeywell where he retired after 35 years. Memorial service Sunday, Sept. 6, 2:30 P.M. at PEACE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 5050 Hodg-son Rd., North Oaks. Bernard Robert McLaughlin, CAPT, USN, Ret., passed away August 27, 2009, in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Nashua, N.H., September 14, 1929, to the late Bernard Philip and Jennie McAdoo McLaughlin. Capt. McLaughlin was a graduate of the United States Naval Academy, Class of 1953. He attended the United States Naval War College graduating with high distinction. His early career consisted of operational assignments in the submarine force culminating in command of the USS Argonaut. Capt. McLaughlin and his crew of the USS Argonaut won the Battle Efficiency Award in 1967. Mid career assignments included duty on the Staff, Commander in Chief Pacific; Executive Officer, Recruit Training Command, San Diego; Chief of Staff, Submarine Squadron Three; and Joint Chiefs of Staff, Washington, D.C. His last assignment was Command of the Naval Sea Support Center, Pacific. He was awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, Navy Expeditionary Medal, Navy Occupation Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and two Meritorious Service Medals. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Elizabeth Gara McLaughlin; daughters, Gara M. Parsons and husband Woody of Virginia Beach, Jennie M. Tarica and husband Alan of Bethesda, Md.; and son, Bernard Philip McLaughlin of Richmond, Va.; a sister, Patricia Shaffer and husband Morris of Jupiter, Fla. He leaves his grandchildren, Elizabeth and Woody Parsons and several nieces and nephews. Barney was a lifelong Red Sox fan, avid reader and walking enthusiast. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 31, at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts. Inc., Laskin Road. A funeral Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 1, at Star of the Sea Catholic Church by Father Steve DeLeon and a burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. During his illness he received exceptional care by the Sentara Home Health Wound Care Nurses.
