At random: The first Japanese prisoner of war captured by the Americans was Kazuo Sakamaki, an ensign in the Imperial Japanese Navy. He was captured on the morning of December 7, 1941. Sakamaki had set an explosive charge to destroy his disabled submarine, which had been trapped on Waimanalo Beach. When the explosives failed to go off, he swam to the bottom of the submarine to investigate the cause of the failure and became unconscious due to a lack of oxygen. Sakamaki was found by a Hawaiian soldier, David Akui, and was taken into military custody. When he awoke, he found himself in a hospital under American armed guard. After the war he returned to Japan and found work with the Toyota Motor Corporation before retiring in 1987. Sakamaki died on November 29, 1999, aged 81.

Dewey Pearson Blackwell, 82, of Pittsfield, CT (Silver Lake), passed away Friday, August 28, 2009, at Chenango Memorial Hospital in Norwich. He was born in Hendersonville, N.C., on March 20, 1927, the son of Jasper and Betty (Greer) Blackwell. He married Norma Jean Allen on Oct. 4, 1952, in New Haven, Conn., a marriage of more than 57 years. He was a member of the VFW of Morris and a member of the Masonic Lodge in Mystic, Conn. He is survived by his wife, Norma, of Silver Lake; his nieces, Dillie Staton of Etowah, N.C., Jacqueline Watkins and Anna Brown, both of Hendersonville, N.C.; as well as several great-nieces and great-nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Jay, Curtis and Brodith Blackwell; and a sister, Ruby Huggins. It is Dewey's request that no services be held, and that he be cremated. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to the Pittsfield Fire Department, 167 State Highway 80, New Berlin, NY 13411 in his memory. Walter C. Sage, 86, of Deltona, FL, formerly of Hudson, N.H., died August 27, 2009, at his home with his family at his side, after a lengthy illness. He was born in Bedford, N.H., June 19, 1923, to Anthony and Frances (Bachta) Saj. He was raised and educated in Bedford and served with the US Navy during World War II; in the submarine service as a sonar operator. He received a World War II Victory Medal, an American Theatre Medal and an Asiatic Pacific Theatre Medal with one star. He owned and operated Sage's TV Service in Nashua and later was employed with the former Sanders Associates Inc. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 92. Family members include his wife of 59 years, Carmelle (Theriault) Sage of Deltona; a son, Walter C. Sage Jr.; four daughters, Wanda Sanford, Waneta Gagne, Wynne Aroom and Eva Marie Sage; 10 grandchildren; and a sister, Amelia Sulin. Visitation is Wednesday from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Farwell Funeral Home, 18 Lock St., Nashua, followed by a graveside service at 2 p.m. in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Pine Hill Avenue, Nashua. Gerald Paul Chartier, of Squantum, MA died on Saturday, died August 29, 2009 after a brief illness. Mr. Chartier was born November 17, 1923 in Chicopee, MA and was raised in Gardner. Gerald met his wife Priscilla in Gardner at a pick-up football game. He tossed her the ball, she caught it and that was the beginning of a lifelong love. They married on April 1, 1945, had five children and made their home in Squantum where they lived for the past 64 years. Gerald was employed by the Patriot Ledger in Quincy, working as a printer for 40 years before retiring in 1987. Gerald also owned and operated his own printing company in Quincy for 25 years. Gerald was proud of being a submariner during WWII on the USS Rock, USS Silversides and USS Mero. In his later years he discovered the pleasure of ocean kayaking; he took his last paddle one month before he died. Gerald was very active in the Quincy Sr. Olympics and was a member of the American Legion in Squantum. Husband of the late Priscilla M. (King) Chartier; son of the late Louis J. Chartier and Alda (Brusseau) Chartier; father of Donna Quinn (Dennis) of Plymouth, Marcia Chartier-Lombard (Jack) of Squantum, Mark Chartier (Julie) of Brockton, David Chartier (Lauren) of Kingston and the late Susan Chartier; brother of Albert Chartier of Gardner and the late Ben Chartier; grandfather of 9 grandchildren. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours Wednesday 4 - 8 p.m. in the Keohane Funeral Home, 785 Hancock Street, WOLLASTON. A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the funeral home at 9 :15 a.m. on Thursday, September 03, 2009 prior to the Funeral Mass in Sacred Heart Church, North Quincy. Burial in Mt. Albert E. DiGregorio, Jr., 50, of Worcester, passed away Saturday, August 29th, 2009, in St Vincent Hospital, after an illness. Albert was born January 20, 1959, in Worcester, a son of the late Albert E. DiGregorio, Sr. Al graduated from North High School, attended Holy Cross College and graduated from the University of New York. Albert joined the Navy in 1975, and served for the next 20 years in the nuclear submarine service before retiring as a Master Chief Petty Officer due to illness. He was a Desert Storm Navy Veteran. Albert is survived by a son, Albert E. DiGregorio III; his mother, Jean (Hoitink) DiGregorio; four brothers and sisters, Joseph A. DiGregorio (Kathleen), Mary Jordan, Rose Coffey (Michael), Anthony J. DiGregorio (partner Ken Willard); and a granddaughter, Kayliann DiGregorio. Besides his father, a brother, James DiGregorio predeceased him. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 2nd at 11:00 a.m. in the Mercadante Funeral Home & Chapel, 370 Plantation St. Burial will be in Massachusetts Veterans Cemetery, Winchendon. Friends and relatives are invited to visit with the family Tuesday, September 1st from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Massachusetts Veterans, Inc., 69 Grove Street, Worcester, MA 01605.

The USS Sea Robin SS-407 Association mourns the loss of our Shipmate Dewey P. Blackwell.

Dewey served with distinction from 1957-1958 as ENC(SS) and many friends.
