70 years ago today, September 1, 1939, German troops crossed the border into Poland, starting perhaps the most devastating conflict in history, the Second World War.

TO REMEMBER

Not long ago, I was asked what started WWII.....I replied that Germany invading Poland did.

I was told I was wrong, it was Germany invading France.....I looked it up, and the website I found also stated this.

Am I wrong? I was always of the opinion the former was the start of WWII.

Cheers

Blue,

You're right (so am I) and the website is wrong..

The Germans didn't invade France until May 1940.

Boy!  We didn't see THAT coming!

After Austria rolled over and played dead, and the British appeased Hitler by letting him have parts of France and Lithuania, and all of Czechoslovakia, who would have thought he wanted all of Europe?

Roosevelt saw it coming....Look at the build up for the 1938 mobilization....the conversion of cavalry to mechanized infantry...introduction of fast moving "Blitzkreig" vehicles like light armor consisting of light tanks, half-tracks, machine gun mounted jeeps and armored command cars (pedestal mounted Heavy Machine Guns and in some cases mounted 50cal quad battery. Lend Lease....American EXPEDITIONARY FORCES deployed in England, China? England, Midddle East...Construction of Air Bases in South and Central America. Starting in 1937, We stated building the vast network of bases and training facilities and became training our regular, reserve and National Guard forces, in instructional techniques, organizational tables, logistics and supply delivery, We issued massive contracts for all sorts of weaponry and ignored foriegn pantents, to launch massive building programs for Bofors 40mm guns, Belguim's BAR (Browning Automatic Rifle), Several English Aircraft Engines....and we appropriated I.G. Farben explosive manufacturing patents that DuPont held in secret. We started a slow almost impreceptable conversion of CCC's to cadre non-commissioned officers to staff newly created units and train Division level units and to serve in key leadership positions during our national buil-up. By 1939 we had tripled our ground forces with more coming into the training command each month. We knew alright...Mister Hitler was no surprise to us...We were'not complacent....but recognized that we needed to buy time, that Winston Churchill gave us at the expenditure of British blood and treasure. No, we saw it coming and NO nation in the history of mankind responded to an untimely mobilization better or more thoroughly than we did and we did a fantastic job policing gouging, war profiteering, sabotage and black marketing during this massive creation of what became known as The American War Effort. I do believe that the BAR (Browning Automatic Rifle) was invented and designed by American John Browning in 1917 for the U.S. Expeditionary Corps in Europe during WW I. I'm sure lots of the m were later used in Belgium in WW II. But I think it is an American weapon.
Like the Thompson Sub Machine gun. It was too later for all but the end of WW I

Here is a link to a .pdf file that explains a little about Browning, and Fabrique Nationale, the Belgium company that produced many of his pistols.
