At random: The first submarine which actually sank another enemy vessel under combat conditions was the CSS HUNLEY built during the Civil War. The Union frigate HOUSATONIC on blockade station off Charleston, S. C. was the victim. The incident occurred on February 17, 1864.

Retired Chief Petty Officer, Robert Duane Finch, 67, of Goose Creek, the husband of Marjorie Lemon Finch, died Tuesday, September 1, 2009 at a local hospital. Mr. Finch was born January 13, 1941 in Otis, Kansas to the late Merlin Elmo Finch and Clara Heiny Finch. Robert retired as a Chief Petty Officer in the United States Navy. After he retired from the Navy, he went on to work as the Ordnance Mechanic at the Charleston Naval Shipyard and the Beaufort Marine Training Base. He was a member of the VFW Post # 3433, The Fleet Reserve Association Branch #269, and a member of the United States Submarine Veterans, Inc., Charleston Base (USSVICB). He was also an avid fisherman and enjoyed bowling as well. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Marjorie; daughter, Cheryl Ferraro and husband Christopher of Huger; sons, Robert Duane Finch and Thomas Robert Finch both of Summerville; brother, Eugene Finch and wife Theresa of Great Bend, Kansas; and granddaughter, Heather Pauline Ferraro of Huger. Mr. Finch is preceded in death by his daughter, Heather Ann Finch and his brother, Charles Finch. Visitation is from 4:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Friday, September 4, 2009 at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, Goose Creek Chapel, 869 St. James Avenue, Goose Creek, SC 29445. A funeral service will begin at 5:00 p.m. which will include honors from The Charleston Base Submarine Veterans, The Fleet Reserve Branch #269, and the VFW Post #3433. William J. McAuliffe, 85, of Locust Grove, Virginia, passed away on Saturday, August 29, 2009. Born July 21, 1924, in North Hampton, Massachusetts, he was a United States Navy veteran serving in the submarine service during World War II [Sea Dog]. He retired as Senior Vice President of DynElectric Corp., Washington, D.C., and continued working as a consultant in the electrical industry for many years. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Michalyn McAuliffe-Clark. He is survived by his wife, Eileen McAuliffe of Locust Grove, Virginia; his daughter, Marie McAuliffe-Wener; and granddaughters, Emily and Christine Wener, all of Charlottesville, Virginia. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2009, at St. Josephs Catholic Cemetery in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Online guest book is available at johnsonfuneralhomeandcrematory.com.
