John E. "Jake" Kettenring, 84, of Escondido, passed away on Tuesday, August 25, 2009 due to a lung disease known as COPD. He was born in Millington, NJ on October 26, 1924. Jake leaves behind his wife, Phyllis "Nickie" and various nieces and nephews. He was a 30-year Navy Veteran and a member of the Submarine Veterans of WWII. He was also a member of Scamp Base of USSVI, an organization formed by Sailors who entered service after WWII. He served in Submarines from 1942-1972 and retired as a Master Chief Quartermaster. His ashes will be scattered at sea by Telephase, per his wishes. In lieu of flowers, a contribution in his memory sent to Elizabeth Hospice will be greatly appreciated. Their address is 150 W. Fred Stack, 89, died Friday, August 21, 2009, at his home in Paso Robles, CA. Fred was born in 1920 in Buffalo, NY, attended school in New York and at the end of his schooling joined the US Navy. During his first year in the Navy, he served on a submarine off of Aleutian Islands. During a depth charge attack on the submarine, Fred was injured and taken to a hospital in Honolulu. After he recovered, he served the next six years on a destroyer in the Pacific during World War II. Fred was a life-time member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, a long time member of the American Legion and Teamsters Union in New York and California. Fred married his first wife, Marian, and had one son. After leaving New York, they moved to Southern California. In 1983, Marian passed away. Eventually Fred, with his current wife, Flora, moved to Las Vegas, Nev., then on to Paso Robles. Fred leaves his wife, Flora Ruble Stack of Paso Robles; son, Tom Stack of Garden Grove, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews. At the request of the deceased, his ashes will be scattered at sea. Subsea Tours will take the family out to sea to scatter Fred''s ashes. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009, at Benedict-Rettey Mortuary, 1401 Quintana Road in Morro Bay.
