Oh, does that bring back memories. The first 2 days are a breeze cause you don't know nothing. Then when you do come around, the constant attention of good looking nurses is (almost) worth going through it. The most professional, competant and beautiful nurses are in the Cardiac Unit. Looking back 6 weeks since my surgery, it doesn't seem all that bad, REALLY!! In a couple days you will hopefully be taking some very small steps to be followed by longer walks down the hall. You will be taking pleasure from very small things in life and the kindness of friends and family. Let them wrap thier arms around you and help you quickly on the road to healing.
Another member of the Zipper Club, Congrads, Bob! Cards and prayers are coming at Ya!

Bob has had an interesting reaction to the prospect of riding cross-country with Ralph. I wonder if Ralph or Doc are more to blame? Get better soon Bob, next Summer will be here shortly.

Yeah Walt, I had some ideas about showing that NewYark city slicker something about mountain driving. Guess I'll have to keep in the "granny lane" now.

Ralph: Don't sell McManus short; he's one tough old bird and he'll be there telling you how to drive; Can you just hear the no s**tters between he and Gentry as they compare their zippers?
He'll be back ornery as ever.

Just in from Bob's wife Mary:

Hi Fred,

Things went well with Bob.

He got into Cardiac ICU at 4:15ish -- three bypasses. The doctor said his heart looked good.

I saw Bob at 5:30ish and then again at 6:00. And there was a huge improvement in just that half hour! At 5:30, he was very pale--but by 6:00 his Irish red cheeks were back. The nurse told me that he was able to follow commands and that's an excellent sign so soon after surgery. (Hey, he's a well trained bubblehead. Of course he follows commands!) Also they started to wean him off the ventilator.

I'm sure by tomorrow he'll be asking for his blackberry!

Great to hear the recovery is going well.  The tough part comes after they stop giving you the "really good drugs"

Hang onto your pillow Bob!!!!

Just received this latest update on McManus from his wife Mary; he continues to improve.
I wonder if I can be a "stringer" for him at the Post?

This is from Mary:

Hi Fred,

Yes, Bob continues to improve. Last night, he was transferred out of the Cardiac ICU to a unit where four heart patients are taken care of by one nurse. In this unit, he'll be hooked up to a portable heart monitor so they can get him up and walking.

Physically he's getting stronger and he's mentally sharp. So sharp that the first thing he asked me yesterday morning were about the results of the previous day's local primary and annoyed with me that I didn't have all the details! Pretty soon, he'll be getting bored. All good signs!

Thanks!

Spoke to McManus last night and he sounded pretty good considering what he went thru. Of course I welcomed him to the zipper club which a number of us, yours truly included, are members of. As of now it looks like he'll be going home Monday which is par for coronary bypass surgery nowadays.
