Reid Schell Byers,87, died September 3, 2009, at Stonebridge at Montgomery in Skillman, N.J. Mr. Byers was born April 11, 1922, in Uniontown, Pa., the son of Wiley Livingston Byers and Pauline Reid Byers. He was a graduate of Franklin and Marshall Academy and Carnegie Mellon University. Mr. Byers retired in 1981 as president of Ingalls Iron Works Company, Marine Division. He was a marine consultant in Pensacola until his retirement in 2001. He served as an officer in the U.S. Navy Submarine Service during World War II and was aboard the USS Segundo at the signing of the peace treaty in Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945. He was a life member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers and a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He served on the board of directors of the American Waterways Operators in Washington, D.C. He was a charter member of the Steering Committee of the American Shipyards Conference and served on the Western Rivers Technical Committee of the American Bureau of Shipping, and on the Board of the Water Resources Council. He also served as a board member of Rotary International. Mr. Byers was a deacon of the First Presbyterian Church of Uniontown, as were his father and grandfather. He was also a deacon in the First Presbyterian Church of Decatur and the Independent Presbyterian Church of Birmingham. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Beall Byers, his son, the Rev. Reid Byers Jr., and his wife, Patricia Burch Byers, and their sons, Reid III and Hartman of Princeton, N.J., and by his son, Dr. Thomas Beall Byers, and his children, Jack and Anna, of Louisville, Ky. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Elizabeth Beall Metzler. Mr. Byers was predeceased by his beloved daughter-in-law, Ann Browning Byers. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Stonebridge Foundation Employees Fund, 300 Hollinshead Spring Road, Skillman, NJ 08558 or Planned Parenthood of Mercer Country, 437 E. State St., Trenton, NJ 08608.

KOEHLER, Harold, 50 year resident of Baldwin, on September 11, 2009. Aged 90 years. Beloved son, brother, uncle and friend. Born in Brooklyn, Harold moved to Baldwin and worked for the US Postal Service until his retirement. A Navy combat Veteran of World War II, he was a survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor and served in the Navy Submarine Service for the duration of the war. The family will receive friends Thursday 2-4 & 7-9pm at Cecere-Pensa Funeral Home, 2283 Grand Ave, Baldwin. Funeral service Friday 12 noon in funeral home chapel. Rev. Kimberly Wilson presiding. SOUTH BEND - Ira David Jones, 83, passed away Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009, in his home surrounded by family and caregivers. Dave was born in Milwaukee, WI, on July 26, 1926 and grew up in Shelbyville, IL. He graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1944 and at the age of 17 enlisted in the Navy where he volunteered for the submarine service. He was honorably discharged in the summer of 1946 and always felt this relatively short experience had a profound influence on his life. Dave was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, American Area Campaign Medal and Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal. Dave graduated from Bradley University in 1949 and went to work for the Oliver Corp. in Shelbyville, IL. On January 26, 1952 he married Joan Weishaar and soon after they were transferred to the Oliver Plant in South Bend, IN. Over the next 17 years Dave worked for three area manufacturing businesses, Bendix, South Bend Bait and Metal Mation. His ten years at Bendix and three years at Metal Mation, a high tech start-up manufacturing operation, prepared him to start his own small manufacturing business in 1969. His company, Dave Jones Machinists, designs and manufacturers Sight-Pipe optical inspection instruments for the metal working industry. Dave's inventions, six patents, and great efforts resulted in a variety of products sold around the world. Dave was very proud that his business provided employment to each of his children, several of their spouses, and various grandchildren at various time over the past 40 years. Dave was actively involved in the business until 2007, and since then enjoyed spending time at the shop. Dave is survived by his wife, of 57 years, Joan; his sister, Alice Lambrick of Decatur, IL; his children, Kathy (Kevin) Butterbaugh of Granger, David (Jane) Jones of Granger, Sandy (Tom) Budd of Granger and Tom (Suzanne) Jones of Osceola and 19 grandchildren, Denise Montague (Travers) Houck, Chris Montague, Erin Montague, Joe Montague (Sarah), Eric Butterbaugh, Lisa Butterbaugh, Lauren Butterbaugh, Anna Butterbaugh, Kara Jones, Nina Jones, Aaron Jones, Cason Jones, Brian Budd (fiancée Sarah Schmid), Danielle Budd, Jim Budd, Amanda Jones, Ashley Jones, Chandler Ankney, Mitchell Ankney and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harriet and Ira Jones, brother, Bob Jones, and a daughter, Susan Jones Montague. Dave enjoyed camping and drawing, but in his own words "I have never had hobbies in the normal sense of the word. Instead, I have received a lifetime of pleasure helping and watching the children and grandchildren grow into adults to be truly proud of". A memorial services will be held at noon Saturday, Sept. 19 in the First Presbyterian Church, 333 W. Colfax where friends may visit with the family after 10 a.m. until time of services. Welsheimer Family Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements. I don't know how to do the obit post the proper way but I just return from the services for Shirle Hammerick IC/EM nuc (SS) retired who served on USS Flasher SSN-613, USS Aspro SSN-648 ~76-79, USS Silversides SSN-679 and Nimitz. He die age 60 on Sept 8 of cancer will be buried tomorrow at Mt Tahoma Cemetery (~1100)
