Norway retained its status as the world's most desirable country, according to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) index released today, followed by Australia and then Iceland." ############################################ Yeah I know, it's the bloody UN....but there must be something in it for Australia to come 2nd! Great Sage of the Sea Posts: 854 | Subject: RE: Human Development Report 2009 - HDI rankings The HDI combines normalized measures of life expectancy, educational attainment, and GDP per capita for countries worldwide. It is claimed as a standard means of measuring human development—a concept that, according to the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), refers to the process of widening the options of persons, giving them greater opportunities for education, health care, income, employment, etc. I'm not to certain about this rating. Reading between the lines it appears to me to be a rating of socialism or government cradle to grave "care" of the citizens. Can anything good come out of the UN?

Master and Commander Posts: 2357 | Subject: Well I am pleased to see.... ...that here in Australia, we are deemed to be pretty high on the list. I think my lifestyle is pretty damn good. 6 weeks leave per year ( for the average Aussie it is 4 weeks ....but I ain't 'average' lol ) Cost of living seems pretty good - Ralph found it expensive here, but that was eating out. I think if he was to take other aspects of life here into consideration then maybe he may see it differently? My recent example of Private Health Care costs being one for a start. The basic wage is around $14.31 per hour - my 14 year old son earns $9 per hour We generally don't worry about Wars, the last time Australia was invaded/bombed was by the Japanese in WWII The weather is pretty damn good ( sooooo looking forward to Summer, this Winter it got down to 1c brrrrrrrrr...... ) So, not saying we are Great, as there is always room for improvement. But it is good to see us up there. To be honest, i did think the USA would be higher than 13....maybe that's why some don't agree/like the UN? If it wasn't for my two kids, I would probably be living in Illinois right now. Blue *_*
