At random: USS R-6 was fitted the first prototype US submarine snorkel at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in the closing months of the European part of WW II in April / May 1945 and successfully tested it off Fort Lauderdale, Fl. as the war against Japan ended in August 1945. The snorkel was removed from the USS R-6 and she was decommissioned and scrapped in September 1945.

TOMEK, Frank John, 89, died Sunday, October 4, 2009 at McLaren Regional Medical Center, Flint, MI. Frank was born in Flushing, MI on March 2, 1920, the son of the late Martin and Agnes (Cesal) Tomek. Mr. Tomek was a World War II Submarine Veteran. [GM2(SS); Gar, Tambor & Hammerhead] On August 3, 1946, he married Victoria Dabrowski and they were married 63 years. Frank was employed at AC Powerhouse for 40 years and he was devoted to Americlean for over 20 plus years. Frank was also an avid gardener all of his life. Surviving are wife Victoria; 5 children, Gregory (Tammy) Tomek, Mary Ellen Isaac, Mary Rita Rivera, Philip (Kari) Tomek and Vicky (Jim) Emrick; 10 grandchildren, Amy and Anthony, Jennifer and Geoffrey, Stephanie (Brian), Ellen, Anna and Kyle, Joshua and Emily; 4 great-grandchildren, Brendan and Lauren, Jacob and Alexandria; sisters-in-law, Stella Harchick and Betty Tomek; many nieces, nephews cousins and friends; special nephew, David Harchick. Frank was preceded in death by parents, two brothers and one sister. Funeral Mass was celebrated 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 7, 2009 at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 1227 E. Bristol Road, Father Tim MacDonald officiated. Burial was in New Calvary Catholic Cemetery with a military graveside service under the auspices of Chevrolet Post #3087 Honor Guard. Ronald Ellis Gossen, CPO, USN, Ret., 71, of the New Hope Community, died September 29, 2009, at his residence. Ron was born Oct. 4, 1937, in Vicksburg, MS, the son of Gus Ellis Gossen and Theodora Jacks Gossen. He served in the Navy as a submariner from 1958 to 1978, and he also retired from Lockheed Missile and Space. He loved music, playing the guitar, and singing gospel music with his friends. He enjoyed woodworking and flying. Ron was a Christian and attended New Hope United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his sister, Jean Alice Prickett. He loved his family and friends deeply, and he will be missed by all. Surviving are, his wife of fifty-one years, Emma Louise Wright Gossen; three daughters, Sharon G. Lincoln and her husband, David, of James Island; Toni G. Oliver and her husband, Kerry, of Rincon, GA, and Helen G. Lood and her husband, Michael, of Summerville; a son, Ronald E. Gossen, II, and his wife, Elizabeth, of James Island; nine grandchildren, Brooke Barrineau, Allison Lincoln, Katie Oliver Camacho, Kerri Oliver, Emily Gossen, Matthew Gossen, Hannah Lood, Christian Lood, and Mary Logan Lood; and two great grandchildren, Alexis and Michael Ellis Camacho. He also leaves behind his brothers and sisters-in-law who gave him great love and support, many nieces and nephews, and good friends, all precious to him. His memorial service will be held 12:00 Noon, Saturday, Oct. 10, 2009, in the New Hope United Methodist Church, with military honors. Officiating will be, Rev. Bill Tanner and Rev. Randall Horres. Friends may call at the church from 11:00 a.m., until the hour of service on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, to the New Hope United Methodist Church, 1253 Jedburg Rd., Summerville, SC 29483, to the Carolina Hospice Care, 410 Mill St., Mt.
