At random: In their history, submarines were called by many names such as 'eel boats', 'plunging boats', 'devil divers', and 'pig boats'. Technically, and by size, the submarine is a ship, but it has been called a boat since its earliest days, and the term is steeped in tradition. Submariners almost invariably call their ships 'boats".

Subject: Russian Submariner Cap Emblem

I struck up a sign language conversation with one of the Russian sub sailors at the ISA convention held jointly with ours (USSVI) in San Diego last month.  He was in civies so I have no idea of his rank etal but by the end of a couple of days in and around our sales tables he became a "sorta friend" - during the last day of their gathering he came by and reached into his kit bag, pulled out his cap, removed this device and gave it to me... I did the hand shake, bear hug (he was BIG) and used my one word of Russian, "spasiba" (thank you) and we parted as "cold war friends"... (I tried to give him Dan but he passed on the offer probably wanting to remain friends - besides Dan drinks more than he does, not well, but a LOT!)...
