At random: The USS SKATE (SSN 578) was the first vessel ever to surface at the North Pole, when on March 17, 1959 she surfaced there to conduct memorial services for the renowned Arctic explorer Sir Hubert Wilkins.

One of my dear friends, PO2 Brandon Byerly is having major surgery this morning. He is the youngest person on record to be diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer, which has spread to his liver and spleen. He has been given a 50-50 cance of survival.

Brandon is a Recruiter for US Navy and we have worked together a lot over the past year. He is one of the nicest people I know and is in need of all the prayers he can get. He has no family in the area; his own mother is currently serving in Afghanistan and could not come in for his siurgery today.

The real kicker is the Navy would not send him to BAMC in San Antonio where the worlds best oncologist are located. Nope, he is having surgery in a tiny hospital in Weatherford, Tx!! Prayers are desperately needed!!!!

I told him I would be there for him so out the door I go. I want to see him before he goes under the knife this morning........

My Stage 3 colon cancer was caught prior to spreading to other organs, just to the lymph nodes, so I'm in the 75/25 category. So far, so good.

Please get me his address quickly so I can help.

OBTW, the skill of the surgeon is not dependent on the size of the hospital or the location of the world's best oncologists. The surgeon removes the cancer; the gastroenterologist locates the colon part and oncologists treat the body with drugs or radiation to kill the remnants or stop their spread. My surgeon in our town of 11,000 was very skilled.

Thanks for the prayers. This BBS never fails to be a great source for them!!

Brandon's surgery went better than expected. They removed a lemon sized malignancy from his colon. What they found on his liver and spleen were benign "blobs of fat", so that is GOOD news! His colon was disected an inch on either side of the tumor, then reattached, so no bag for now. It is expected he will remain in the hospital for at least a week. His father drove in from Louisiana late yesterday afternoon and his sister came in late last night from Baytown, near Houston. His mother was able to get a flight from overseas, but didn't arrive until about 3 this afternoon. So he will have family with him for a few days, which makes me feel better, and I'm sure Brandon as well.

His address is
PO2 Brandon Byerly, Room 234
c/o
Weatherford Regional Medical Center
713 E. Anderson Street,
Weatherford, TX 76086
