Edwin M Talbott Jr., 86, died peacefully on October 11, 2009 after a full life. Born in Baltimore in 1923, he attended Baltimore Polytechnic Institute and graduated from Johns Hopkins School of Engineering in 1944. Ranked Ensign and Lieutenant J.G, he served in the United States Navy Submarine Service during the last 16 months of World War II. During shore leave, he learned to fly airplanes and took piano lessons. His teacher was the talented Hazel Peterson of Lynn Massachusetts. She gave him piano lessons and he took her flying. They married in 1947, and settled in the Baltimore area for an interesting and adventurous 62 years of marriage. Mr. Talbott graduated from the University of Baltimore School of Law in 1950, and was a Member of the Maryland State Bar. His career spanned engineering with management positions at US Industrial Chemicals, Bendix and Martin Marietta Corporations, Faculty at Drexel University, company founder and president of several local enterprises, importer of Japanese marine radar systems. He authored the book Compressed Air Systems, A Guidebook on Energy and Cost Savings, and held several patents. Later in his professional life, he started a new career as Investment Banker and Business Broker. Mr. Talbott had an unwavering love for his wife Hazel, a need for business challenge and adventure, a passion for flying small planes, a spirit for exploration, travel, reading and history. He had a brilliant mind with a keen sense of humor. Mr. Talbott was a Unitarian Universalist throughout his adult life. He was a founding member of the Towson Unitarian Universalist Church (TUUC), and served in numerous leadership positions for the church. Mr. Talbott is survived by his wife, Hazel B. Talbott of Towson, two sisters, Carolyn T. Gorsuch of Annapolis MD and Ruth T. Keimig of Fearrington Village NC; three children including eldest daughter Kristen Talbott Sawyer and her husband Thomas K Sawyer, of Annapolis Md, son David Edwin Talbott and his wife Maryellen Deschenes of Portland Maine; and youngest child Stephanie Bartlett Talbott of Pittsboro NC. Mr. Talbott is also survived by five extraordinary grandchildren, Michael Sawyer of Annapolis Md, Rebecca M Sawyer of Lake Tahoe, CA, Olivia Talbott of Columbus OH, Isabella Talbott of Portland Maine, and Genevieve Talbott of Portland Maine. In addition, he is survived by two great-grandchildren; Brianna and Matthew Sawyer of Arnold, Md. A memorial service and celebration of life will be held at the Towson Unitarian Universalist Church, 1710 Dulaney Valley Road at 11:00 A.M. on November 7, 2009. The family wish to thank the staff of Edenwald and Gilcrest Hospice for the high quality of care delivered to Mr. Talbott, and the ongoing support to his wife. Jack Owen Glendening, 81, of Forestville, widower of Constance (Vandrilla) Glendening and Kathleen (Dutkiewicz) Glendening, passed away on Monday (October 12, 2009. He was born April 12, 1928 in Marysville, OH, son of the late Fred and Helen (Barker) Glendening. Jack was a US Navy veteran during the Korean War and had served on the submarine USS Torsk (SS-423) from 1947 to 1954. A longtime resident of Forestville, he had been employed as an engineer for Rowland Products in Berlin. He was known as grampa Jack to many, always had a warm smile, a joke, and a story to tell. Jack enjoyed his Subvet meetings, his trips to Vermont, loved all animals, woodworking, reading, playing pool, and visiting with his brother, friends, and family. He is survived by his daughter, Kathleen (Rick) Govotski of Bellows Falls, VT; grandchildren, Kelsey, Justin, Jana, and Martin; brother, Leonard Glendening of Bristol; and his buddy, Nancy Roman of Plainville. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 17, at 11 a.m. at the O'Brien Funeral Home, 24 Lincoln Ave., Forestville. Burial, with Military Honors, will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bristol. James Kenneth Harter, 61, resident of Castro Valley, passed away September 25, 2009 after a courageous battle with brain cancer at home with his best friend and adoring wife Lori at his side. He was born in Liberty Center, OH January 26, 1948, the son of Ethel and Kenneth Harter. Jim graduated from Ohio State University before joining the US Navy. He proudly served five years stationed upon the submarine USS Swordfish (SSN-579) as a nuclear reactor operator. After the Navy, he settled in California and achieved a position as a research scientist with top secret clearance at Lawrence Livermore lab retiring after 33 years. Jim enjoyed reading books and doing crossword puzzles but even though he was a quiet man, he got his greatest pleasure when helping others. He tutored kids in math and science and took great pleasure driving his grandchildren from event after event. Jim was always available to help out a friend and never expected anything in return. He loved his Ohio State football team and Oakland A's and was an active member of the Moose Lodge where he triumphed frequently at dice and cribbage with his friends. Jim will always be remembered by his friends and family as a very kind, thoughtful gentleman. Jim is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his loving wife Lori, whom he referred to as "My Angel", who will miss her "Honey" immensely; children Kenneth Harter, Scott and Michael Honer, and Marcee Strickell (Bob); brothers Oliver of TX and Darrel of OH; and brother Bud (Terry) Perry. "Papa Jim" was adored by his four grandsons Cory, Brandon, Matthew and Zachary. Stephen C. Pierce, 36, a resident of Gaithersburg, MD for the past 14 years, and formerly of Townsend, died suddenly in his home, Monday, October 12, 2009. Stephen was born in Lowell, October 13, 1972, a son of Larry L. and Mary (Gould) Pierce, and grew up in West Townsend. He was a 1990 graduate of Minuteman Regional Technical High School in Lexington where his studies focused on Robotics and Electronics. Following his graduation from high school he spent six years in the US Navy as an Electronics Technician, Second Class (SS), where he ran the nuclear power plant for a submarine. After leaving the service, Stephen worked for the National Institute for Standards and Technology and then the Nuclear Regulatory Commission while earning a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Maryland. He was currently employed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission based in Bethesda, MD. He attended the North Bethesda United Methodist Church in Bethesda, MD. Besides his parents of Mason, NH, he leaves his daughter, Jessica Lee Pierce of Guam; his brother, Eric R. (Andrea) of Ashby; two nephews, Brent Pierce and Dylan Pierce; his maternal grand-mother, Joyce Gould of AZ. A funeral service will be held 11 AM, Saturday, October 17, 2009 at the T.J. Boyd H. Smart, 58, submariner, CAD designer, consummate chef, proud Mensa member, friend to manatees, connoisseur of adult beverages and "Jimmy B", passed away Sunday, October 11, 2009. He was born on April 24, 1951 to the late John Lee Smart and Velma Smart. A caring friend and brother who was always a multi-sided enigma. A man with a dark sense of humor and a cheerful bad example to many. He will be missed. Donald Wayne Monical passed away peacefully on Sept. 24, 2009. He was born Aug. 3, 1947, in Aiea, Hawaii, to Russell and Marietta Monical. Don was a Veteran of the United States Navy Submarine Service, having served in the Vietnam War, and after 37 years, he also retired from the U.S. Postal Service. he is survived by his daughter, Julie Monical and grandson, Nico Venasquez of Long Beach; his son and daugher-in-law, Justin and Tami Monical and their two daughters, Mikaela and Mickenzi of Joshua Tree; his former wife Scoti Soard of Lancaster; and longtime companion, Sandy Evans of Carpenteria. Don was known as the "Candyman" of Nordoff High School (Ojai) football games during the 1990'. In retirement, Don gained immesurable pleasure traveling, spending time with his dog Koa at the Island Brewing Company, and greeting visitors to Carpenteria as a City Host volunteer. As a Carpenteria Valley Chamberof Commerce Ambassador, he was honored as the 20007 Volunteer ofhte Year. The U.S. Navy Submarine Sailors will honor Don with a celebration of his life on Sunday, Oct. 25, at Island Brewing Company. A "friends and family" celebration will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov 8 at the Carpenteria Woman's Club. A dish to share would be appreciated.
