At random: "Diving Officer, I believe we are airborne" OOD, looking out the periscope after a broach.
Bye, bye Soupy....

US comedian Soupy Sales, who had no less than 20,000 pies thrown at him during a career spanning half a century, has died at the age of 83.

Sales died in a hospice in New York after being admitted a week ago, his former manager Dave Usher said.

During the 1950s and 60s, Mr Usher said, Sales was one of the most instantly recognizable faces in the US.

Having pies hurled at him became his trademark act and he acknowledged that this would be his legacy.

"I'll probably be remembered for the pies, and that's all right," he said in a 1985 interview.

His television career began in Detroit and he then moved to Los Angeles in 1961.

On his television program, celebrities including Frank Sinatra and Shirley MacLaine were spattered standing next to the comedian, often wearing his trademark oversized bow tie.

His most widely acclaimed television program was "The Soupy Sales Show" which appealed to children and adults alike.

I watched his noontime TV show everyday when I was a kid growing up in Detroit; his night time show was even funnier.

According to the Yahoo news story, he was a WWII US Navy Veteran.

While on patrol once, we had a Blue Nose ceremony which ended in a pie fight.

The CM Chief had made jello and whipped cream pies just for the ocassion.

I vaguely remember him getting booted off TV in the early 60's.

Supposedly it was because of this joke he told:

How does a baby sitter quiet a crying kid -- She gives it a bust in the mouth.

I think I got his joke pretty much correct.  No big deal today, but double entendre didn't fly so well in the era where even saying the word pregnant was verboten.

Two of his jokes that contributed to his being kicked off the air is:

"My girlfriend can't make a lemon meringue pie, but she sure can make my banana cream."

and: counting off his fingers, "This is for my mother, this is for my father, this is for my producer, and THIS one is for my director." (erect middle finger)
