Stephen (Steve) Petreshock, 88, of 1418 Colombus St., Manitowoc, died on Monday evening, Oct. 26, 2009, at Aurora Medical Center of Manitowoc County. Steve was born on Sept. 17, 1921, in Simpson, Pa., son of the late George and Mary Petreshock. He attended schools in Simpson. In 1939, Steve joined the CCC's. He worked at Rockefeller Center in New York City. In May 1941, Steve enlisted in the Navy and became a flight engineer aboard a PBY seaplane based in Jacksonville, Fla. In 1943, he attended submarine school. Upon graduation, he was assigned to the USS Redfin detail here in Manitowoc. Steve served aboard the Redfin, R-14, and Boarfish in the South Pacific during WWII. Steve married Shirley Heyduk in 1953. She preceded him in death in 1981. In 1982, he married Evelyn Kiesner at First Presbyterian Church in Manitowoc. She preceded him in death on April 21, 2007. After 21 years in the U.S. Navy, serving aboard four submarines during his career, he retired as a torpedoman. Steve worked as a commercial artist and designer at Mirro Corporation for 20 years, retiring in 1983. Steve was a national artist for "Polaris" magazine, the official publication for US Submarine Veterans of WWII for 42 years and designed the submarine calendar for 18 years. His paintings and artwork are displayed in museums and private collections from coast to coast as well as the British Royal Navy Museum in England. His works have also been presented to and accepted by the late President Dwight D. Eisenhower and the former Secretary of the Navy Lawrence Garrett III. Locally, Steve designed the official Manitowoc County Seal. Steve was a member of the US Submarine Veterans of WWII where he was a state commander for two years. He was also a member of US Submarine Veterans, Inc., VFW Otto Oas Post No. 659, American Legion Post No. 88, Fleet Reserve of Green Bay, Rahr-West Museum, and one of the five founders and starters of the Wisconsin Maritime Museum. Survivors include three sons: Dennis Petreshock, Manitowoc; Stephen Petreshock Jr., Ariz.; George Haase, Ill.; one daughter and son-in-law: Susan and George Lettenberger, Manitowoc; daughter-in-law: JoAnn Petreshock, Manitowoc; three step children: William and Judy Kiesner, Sun Valley, Nev.; Kenneth and Pamela Kiesner, Bellingham, Wash.; Linda and Gary Koch, Portage, Mich.; one sister and brother-in-law: Lillian (John) Fendrock. Steve was blessed with many, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Steve was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Shirley, and his second wife, Evelyn; one son: David Petreshock; one daughter: Linda Petreshock; three brothers: Joseph, John and Nic; five sisters: Tess, Jean, Stella, Laura and Ina; one nephew: Dr. Edward Petreshock. Funeral services will be held at noon on Friday, Oct. 30, 2009, at the Jens Family Funeral Home & Crematory, 1122 S. Eighth St., Manitowoc. Rev. Dr. Matthew L. Sauer will officiate with entombment to follow at Calvary Mausoleum. Military services will be accorded by VFW Otto Oas Post No. 659. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of services at noon. Richard A. "Dick" Steward SAN MARCOS -- Dick Steward passed away on Friday, October 23, 2009 from injuries after being hit by a car while on his morning walk with his wife, Norma. Dick was born in Rockford, Illinois on October 3, 1926. After graduating from West High School, he immediately joined the United States Navy Submarine Corps and served his country from 1944 to 1946. Dick and Norma were married on February 14, 1948. Later, he attended the University of Wisconsin Pharmacy School and graduated in the class of 1962. Dick was a partner in the family-owned Lenz Pharmacies and directly managed the store in Loves Park, Illinois for 25 years. During his 60 years in Rockford, Dick served on the board of United Bank, was President of Lions Club in Loves Park, and President of Winnebago County Pharmaceutical Association. He was also a member of Forest Hills Country Club. Dick and his wife Norma, moved to San Diego County, California in 1987. He was a pharmacist at the VA Hospital in San Diego from 1987-1992, retiring after a 30 year career in pharmacy. Dick was very active in several community projects and events in the Lake San Marcos Community where he and Norma reside. He also served Meadowlark Community Church, San Marcos, CA as President of the Church Council for two terms. Dick is survived by Norma Steward, his wife of 61 years; as well as his daughter, Connie (Tony) Sabatino; son, Randy (Lisa) Steward; and five grandchildren, Lisa, Peter, and Nicholas Sabatino, and Michael and Emily Steward. He is also survived by his brother, Burritt Steward; and his sister, Alyce Lutzow. Services will be held at Meadowlark Community Church, San Marcos, at 11 am, Friday, October 30, 2009. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established at Meadowlark Community Church, 1918 Redwing Street, San Marcos, Calif. 92078. Sign the Guest Book online obits.nctimes.com
