I want to write," (space between floor gratings and the inner hull) I know he was there and I wasn't, but did he make a mistake; should it have been 'inner?'

Waiting with baited breath. (Actually I'm going to take a break and fix myself a sandwich.)

I know...someone told me I'm too hung up on details! But....

Leave out all that you have in 'explanation' and you have a complete sentence that well describes the event. IMHO
