At random: Coronation ceremonies of Emperor Alexander II of Russia in 1855 were enlivened by a submarine concert. Wilhelm Bauer, a Bavarian inventor, took three musicians under the waters of Kronstadt Harbor in a submarine he had built, where they played appropriate music during the coronation. The music was distinctly heard on the surface.

This article is pretty dated but then again, so was the Cold War. For once a journalist has written it up quite well without any of the usual cock-ups they normally make when writing about stuff they are not familiar with.

Mostly correct but unless "passengers" were carried, each member had an own bunk. Some passengers could be bunked in the fore-ends without causing much disruption to the torpedo load. Just required some fish in the tubes - normal case anyway.

Didn't notice the smell until the boat 'opened up' to clean air. All in it together and smelt together. Cold water was better than the tropics; bilges stayed cold and relatively smell free compared to the smell when the seawater is 85 F. Bacteria fester so much better when they are warm.

Yep. Nothing to dispute there. Thanks for posting Pedro.
