At random: Fleet Admiral Halsey in a book called "The Admirals" when asked "What is the ultimate strategic weapon that is bringing the enemy to its knees? Halsey's reply "If I had to give credit to the instruments and machines that won us the war in the Pacific, I would rank them in this order: SUBMARINES, FIRST; RADAR, SECOND; PLANES, THIRD AND BULLDOZERS FOURTH."

Wonder if it tastes like Chourico or Linguica. Being raised by Mom and Dad from Fall River, I was introduced to both at an early age.

Not to worry SPAM fans, you don't have to go to Hawaii or to John's house and steal his supply - you can get your own can of Portuguese SPAM here:  http://www.spam.com/varieties/spam-portuguese-sausageyou

So like you dantini!!! Your link takes us to a "wormhole"  LOL  Ric's takes us to the right spot!  Buying from the company is not the same as your local grocery store (PLUS their price - yikes! - $3.50 w/o S&H).  It probably doesn't hurt that Terri (the daughter) is a manager of a Foodland (chain) on Oahu...  GOOOOOD post guys!!!

My dad's family is from Fall River.

Hot Chorizo bread with the butter melting on it. Yum!

Substitute chourizo/linguica for the meatballs in a meatball sub. GOOD stuff!

As a result of this collection of postings, I bought a couple of cans last week and had some for breakfast over the weekend. It was good and will have to do it more often. Had the original so now will have to try the others....

Just read that SPAM is great catfish bait, especially if it is sprayed with WD-40 or Preparation H.  I s**t you not.  CLICK HERE

AtoZ - after reading your post, I went to the Katz's website and considered buying a Pastrami sandwich for a whopping $60 to see if it was a good as you claimed.  When I filled out the order form, I found out that they charge an exceptional $75 shipping fee for that $60 order.  There is NO Pastrami sandwich in the world that is worth $135.  I don't care how good it may be.  I'll just have to take your word for that.

You can always come to NYC. We've got an extra bedroom which is generally unused.

In Katz' the Pastrami sandwich is $16.95, cash only, no tip necessary since you pick it up at the carving counter, cafeteria style, yourself.

It's worth the trip just for the sandwich.

Make it more interesting to make the trip. Besides Katz's how about the bagels at Russ and Daughters, Ray's Pizza, Pickle Bros, (Capitol??) Bakery. All within walking distance. Call it a heart unhealthy trek. But you only have to do it once.

Thanks for the offer AtoZ.  If Meg Ryan was going to be there when I was there, it would well be worth the expense and I wouldn't mind that expenditure at all.   However, I'm pretty sure she is not waiting for me to show up, so I will have to pass on your generous offer.  I will take your word for how good the sandwiches actually are, as they look really special on their webpage.

There used to be a KATZ'S DELI in Austin when I lived there. I went there once.  As far as the Texans knew, it was authentic NYC deli.  That was about as accurate as AUTHENTIC TEXAS BBQ was in NYC at the time.

Perception is the new reality.

WE have a NY Deli near Seattle called Goldbergs. Patti and her son have been there and swear it is authentic. The place is always packed. Love the food.

Okay, now listen, I’m gonna ask you to drop everything you’re doing and just wire me $2,000. I need it to get access to a vast fortune that’s been left to me by a Nigerian prince who just happens to be a distant relative. And I promise that when I get the money, I’ll give you a big cut. That’s got to work, right? I mean, if it didn’t, why would Nigerian prince scam spam clog your in-box year after year?

Only $2000? You must somehow be on their S#$t list. My offers from them come in the millions. Even the Brits are trying to contact me about my lottery winnings. Even those dwarf your measly $2000. You need better friends.

Agree (gulp) with Ric - heard from several NY transplants that Goldbergs is the real deal, especially the pastrami.  Ric, I think it's in Factoria.  I will try to get there this weekend and check it out.

Dan,
Having eaten in Katz's many times, brisket, corned beef and pastrami I can assure you it is delicious regardless of your choice. However, it is not worth $135.00 per, to have one sent you. Your just gonna have to wait for your next trip to the Big Apple...Then enjoy!

Then there was the Stage Deli midtown on 7th Ave. Right now around the corner from us on 235th St in Riverdale there's Liebman's Deli which compares favorably in all foods, including Pastrami, favorably with Katz'.
