At random: The USS NAUTILUS SSN 571 steamed 60,000 miles on a lump of Uranium the size of a golf ball. A diesel powered submarine would have required 3,000,000 gallons or 300 railway tank cars of oil.

Sri Lankan Navy do a great job rescuing a wild elephant from the Indian Ocean. Jumbo was doing an even better job at snorkelling.

Wonder if that is where the Germans got the idea for a snorkle?

The Dutch invented the snorkel. In fact they offered the technology to the US Navy who turned it down. When the Germans invaded they took the technology and incorporated it.

First US snorkel being tested on the USS R-6 in 1945.

I saw another report that the elephant was eight miles from shore.  Swept away or not I guess they're pretty good swimmers.

The heffalump was a news item here. They said it was 13 to 15 miles offshore and it took the better part of 24 hours to get it back onshore. They are good swimmers and can easily negotiate three to four miles but this one was in trouble and probably would have succumbed to exhaustion.

I have seen video of Orca's attacking and killing a swiming moose. I wonder how many elephants have been attacked by sharks? Seems logical that it would happen.
