Atlantic 05/21/73: The USS Sturgeon (SSN-637) strikes the bottom of the ocean suffering minor damage while operating in deep water during a dive off the U.S. Virgin Islands. The Navy says there were no injuries to the crew and the submarine's nuclear power plant was not affected. The submarine put into the nearest U.S. port at Frederiksted, St. Croix, under its own power.

5-22-1968 The USS Scorpion (SSN-589) sinks about 400 miles southwest of the Azores, killing all 99 men on board.
