At random: Among the 'first' that Electric Boat Division has introduced into American submarines, have been the marine Diesel engine, the perfected use of the storage battery, the combination of battery and internal combustion engine, and the world's first adaptation of nuclear energy to propulsion in the USS NAUTILUS.

Retired chief in the local area is moving to Hawaii and didn't want to drag a bunch of stuff with him. This was in with some of the items I was given. It originally came off the Aspro SS 309. For those who never seen one, it is called a ISWAS it predated the TDC but was carried as a back up.

Ric, we have actually conducted a firing run approach and shot a torpedo ( exercise shot) with a is-was. The theory being, if you know where you is and know where you was, then you will know where you are going to be.

It is to bad the Dick Breckenridge passed away he was on the 309 and got Navy Cross in WWII and I am sure he had that in his hands more than once

I would hope that before you donate to a museum piece you will take a ton of pictures because the 648 ASPRO will be inviting what we can locate of 309 crew to our reunions last time I check we only had 10 of the WWII crew still alive.

Neat.

Wonder what it would cost to have a few replicas made?

Ric, it don't belong to you, as in "I was given", it belongs to the public!!!!!!!! Get it donated!!! (where ever)... I really don't think you need to keep one of these things (banjo) to prove you can shoot a torpedo!

I'm pretty sure that what Ric has is NOT the Banjo, but is the IS/WAS. There is a pretty good description of the Banjo, with pictures and instructions for use at http://www.hnsa.org/doc/banjo/index.htm

This is why I would like to see this go to the Pamapnito.

Richard Pekelney, you all know the work he has done to make available tons of manuals and such online.
